Diamond days for the Society of the Spectacle

It is 60 years since the first advertisement on British television was shown on 22nd September 1955. ... and society has been hypnotised ever since. In the 1990s regular surveys indicated that a third of the British TV viewing public thought that the advertisements were better than the programmes on television. I noticed this landmark event in spectacular domination on a recent visit to the fascinating National Media Museum in Bradford.
